About
The Church of the Intercession of the Serpukhov community of Old Believers of Fedoseevsky piety was built in Zaborye (Serpukhov district) at the Maraev weaving factory and at their expense. The beginning of construction dates back to 1908. In 1912, a stone church with a bell tower and a prayer room was consecrated and until 1987, services of the local community of Old Believers, Fedoseyevites, were held there.
The Old Believers Church of the Intercession is a unique architectural and cultural monument that attracts the attention of both locals and tourists. The church, built in the traditional Russian style, is characterized by bright colors and exquisite details that emphasize its spiritual significance. Special attention is drawn to the carved iconostases and murals made by masters of their craft, which convey the depth of faith and devotion to the Old Believer tradition.
The Church of the Intercession not only serves as a place for worship, but is also an important cultural center. The Old Believers, who have preserved their customs and beliefs for centuries, are an important part of Russia's cultural heritage. In 1987, the temple was transferred to the museum. Now it houses the exhibition "Spiritual Culture of the Old Believers", dedicated to Old Believer church art, which presents unique collections of Old Believer art of the XVII–XX centuries: easel tempera paintings, old printed and handwritten books, fabrics, church utensils, furniture. It also hosts various events, including celebrations, lectures, and exhibitions dedicated to the history of the Old Believers and their role in Russian culture. Visitors can learn about the traditions and customs of the Old Believers, as well as get acquainted with their spiritual practices. Visiting the Intercession Church in the Maraev estate is an opportunity to touch deep spirituality and learn more about the diversity of Russian culture. The facility is open to the public with guided tours.
Thus, the Pokrovskaya Old Believer Church in the Maraev estate is not just an architectural object, but a living historical monument that continues to inspire and attract people with its spiritual power and beauty.
The architectural prototypes of the Pokrov Old Believer Church are the Russian Village churches of the 17th century, the temples of the Old Believer Preobrazhensky cemetery in Moscow. The single-domed quadrangle is flanked by a refectory and service rooms, and a slender tent-roofed bell tower rises above the western porch. A distinctive feature of the church is the absence of an altar part, since the Old Believers without priests do not have priests, which means that the liturgy is not served.
